Experience a Journey Through Time With Portrait Photographer Irina Garsh

In the quiet world of fine art photography, Irina Garsh stands out with a gaze that is both sensitive and profound. Originally from Kirov, Russia, this portrait photographer has gained recognition for her delicate compositions, subtle use of natural light, and the deep emotion she captures in her subjects. Her portraits — mainly of women and children — feel suspended in time, blending the essence of classical painting with a modern poetic touch.

What is Lens Stories?

At CYME, we believe every photograph is more than an image — it’s a window into a story, a feeling, a unique perspective on the world. With our Lens Stories series, we celebrate the artists who reveal beauty in the ordinary and meaning in the fleeting. These photographers invite us behind the scenes of their creative process — sharing the inspirations, methods, and personal vision that shape their work. As makers of Peakto, a tool that empower visual storytellers, we’re proud to support those who turn passing moments into lasting impressions.

When the Human Soul Speaks Through Irina Garsh’s Portraits

My name is Irina Garsh, I’m 35 years old, and I was born in a small town. I graduated from school with top marks and a medal, then went on to study Mechanical Engineering Technology at university. After that, I worked in a factory for three years — but I found it difficult to live without creativity.

That creative spark reappeared when I went on maternity leave. I saw photos taken by my friends and thought, “I can do that — maybe even better.” I worked hard, practiced constantly, and my efforts paid off. In the beginning, I was inspired by fairy tales, legends, and nature. Today, I find my inspiration in people — in their souls, their emotions, and their inner worlds.

When Portrait Photography Feels Like Painting and Emotions Take Shape

I’ve been interested in drawing since childhood, and I’ve always had a deep love for painting. When I discovered photography that looked like paintings, I realized how much it inspired me — and that I wanted to create that kind of work myself. To me, that is true photographic art.

It’s important for me to reveal the inner state of the model or to express an emotion I’ve envisioned, using visual and expressive tools. Both the concept and the technical execution matter deeply to me.

6 Things Irina Garsh Learned on Her Path to Portrait Photography

Talent is not as important as hard work

Natural talent can give you a head start, but it’s perseverance, effort, and discipline that will take you further. The more you practice, the more you learn — and that’s where real growth happens.

Abilities and imagination can be developed

Creativity isn’t fixed — it’s a skill you can nurture. Read, observe, experiment. The more you challenge your mind, the more it expands.

Photography helps develop not only creatively, but also personally

Behind the camera, you don’t just shape images — you shape your perspective. Photography teaches patience, empathy, and how to see the world with more depth.

Don’t be afraid of mistakes — they improve your skills

Every misstep is a lesson in disguise. The best way to progress is to keep trying, analyzing, and refining. Mistakes aren’t failures — they’re essential steps forward.

Art can convey the highest values

Photography has the power to speak to the heart, to raise awareness, to preserve truth, and to inspire. Never underestimate the emotional and cultural value your work can hold.

Create with the kind of integrity you’d want to share with your children

Let your work reflect your values, your vision, and your honesty. Aim to produce something you’d be proud to show to the next generation.

Seeing the Invisible With Irina Garsh: Portraits Beyond the Surface

I have many favorite photos, each with its own interesting story, but this one stands out the most for me. It portrays a man who is both a priest and a poet.

You know, when I’m photographing someone, I often feel their soul — sometimes more strongly, sometimes more subtly. In his case, his soul was immense — so beautiful, powerful, and filled with love. I tried to capture that in the image.

It means a lot to me when I’m able to convey someone’s inner world in a way that others can truly feel it — that they connect emotionally. I believe I was able to do that with this portrait.

Irina’s Personal Tips to Make Your Portrait Photography More Meaningful

Shoot as much as possible and find your own style

It’s essential to photograph what truly excites and inspires you — the subjects that allow you to express yourself creatively. You’ve probably experienced shoots that energized you, and others that left you feeling drained. Pay attention to what lights you up, and follow that path.

Don’t listen to those who doubt you

Beginning photographers are especially vulnerable to criticism and self-doubt. That’s why, alongside building your technical and creative skills, you must also cultivate inner strength — the kind that helps you stay grounded and resilient during difficult moments.

Be grateful to your teachers

Our mentors have guided us, inspired us, and helped shape our journey. Recognizing their impact matters — because gratitude, too, is a form of art. Use what you’ve learned to contribute something beautiful to the world around you.
