From Racing Pigeons to Street Photography: A Journey of Passion and Persistence

Coming from a family where painting and music were part of the daily routine, my father always guided me towards art. However, being too young then, I had no interest in these activities, as racing pigeons and activities with them were more important to me back then.

After several years, I had the opportunity to move to London, where I met a man named Dan, a photography enthusiast with a professional camera. He would bombard me daily with stories about the photos he took during his vacations and how clear they were. These stories ignited a spark in me, and I told Dan I wanted a camera to try taking pictures.

I was discouraged a few times and told it was difficult and expensive; I was stubborn and bought a small camera from a shop selling old items. I remember coming home, holding the camera in my hand, pretending to take pictures, and dreaming of the wonderful photos I would create, the large lenses I would attach to the camera, and the colourful straps I would wear around my neck.

The first steps were simple, starting with ducks in the park, flowers in front of the house, the garden, people passing on the street, and other simple things that any enthusiastic beginner photographs at the beginning.

Then came the more difficult stage, where I began studying different photographers, buying books, reading biographies of famous photographers like Ansel Adams and Steve McCurry, and discovering camera models, editing techniques, composition, and everything related to photography. I photographed almost all genres, including weddings. Still, I had a special love for street photography and the connection I had with it, as well as the atmosphere and the feeling that the street personally inspired in me.

One day, I decided to give up other photography genres (including wedding photography) and focus exclusively on street photography in the way I saw it. After this decision, I began to study street photography more and sharpen my instinct for hunting light and the moments happening around me. I dreamed of capturing photos as impressive as the ones I had seen in significant magazines, capturing decisive moments as I had read in the great Bresson’s book. Still, I knew how much work awaited me and how many kilometres I had to walk on this path.

5 Key Lessons Ovidiu Selaru Learned Through Street Photography

Patience and Observation

Photography teaches you to be patient and truly observe the world around you. It’s not just about taking a picture; it’s about waiting for the right moment, the right light, and the right emotion. Being present and aware can transform an ordinary scene into something extraordinary.

Embrace the Imperfections

Photography is not always about perfection. Some of the most powerful images come from moments that are raw, imperfect, or spontaneous. Learn to embrace the flaws in your work—it’s often these imperfections that make an image stand out and connect with people on a deeper level.

Tell a Story

Every photo has the potential to tell a story. Whether it’s a fleeting moment or a carefully staged composition, strive to capture the emotion, context, or narrative behind the image. A good photograph invites the viewer to think, feel, and engage with what’s happening in that single frame.

Use Light as a Tool

Light is the foundation of all great photography. Learn how to manipulate it—whether through natural light, artificial sources, or shadow play. The way you use light can completely change the mood, depth, and impact of your image. It’s not just about exposure, but how light interacts with your subject.

Find Your Unique Perspective

Every photographer has a unique perspective, but it takes time to develop it. Experiment with different angles, compositions, and subject matter. Don’t be afraid to break the rules if it helps you communicate your personal vision. Trust your instincts and find what makes your images stand out from the crowd.

When Street Photography Becomes a Powerful Escape

Eight years ago, right after my father passed away and we buried him, I was in a state of confusion and sorrow. I was in London on a sunny day, but the light that filtered through the city’s ironwork couldn’t reach my soul. I remember that I couldn’t find any photographs from that time, nothing that would remind me of him in a tangible way. The pain had wholly consumed me, and the world seemed to move forward, oblivious to everything I had lost.

I went out to take photos, perhaps because photography had often offered me an escape. It allowed me to focus on something unrelated to what was happening inside me. I was there, but my mind was elsewhere. But then, I noticed a different light, a unique atmosphere that seemed to come from another world. It was a moment that took my breath away, a blend of the bright sunlight and the shadows dancing on the London pavement. That moment reminded me that not everything is lost, even though life moves on. I grabbed my camera and pressed the shutter.

That photograph became Apocalyptic – a tribute to my father and a symbol of transformation. The name came not from a conscious choice but from a deep sense of revelation. It was a photograph that symbolised the end of an era for me and the beginning of another chapter. I allowed myself to meditate on that image, letting it carry me through my thoughts, bringing me peace amid the inner chaos. It was my way of confronting the pain, of turning it into a form of understanding.

Ovidiu Selaru’s Advice to Aspiring Street Photographers

Building a Strong Foundation

To build a solid foundation in photography, start by educating yourself on this genre through quality books. Learn to see light and moments as they unfold, as these are the essence of impactful photography. Additionally, play with different forms of composition to explore creative possibilities. Finally, make use of the manual settings on your camera to take full control over exposure, ensuring your vision translates perfectly into your images.

Starting Small and Practical

Avoid spending too much time or money on sophisticated equipment or the latest lenses. Instead, focus on exploring the city you live in, which offers plenty of opportunities to practice and develop your skills.

Developing Your Creative Vision

Strive to capture authentic and spontaneous moments, avoiding the temptation to create situations or intervene too much in the scene. Pay close attention to small details, like facial expressions or gestures, as these can bring emotion and storytelling to your photos. Don’t hesitate to experiment with different angles and perspectives to craft more engaging images. Most importantly, develop your own style rather than imitating other photographers, and focus on expressing your unique vision.

Cultivating Discipline and Patience

Be consistent in your photographs and take the time to develop your skills through regular practice. Learn to be patient, as great shots often require waiting for the perfect moment. Consider going out to photograph alone; this will help you focus fully on what you need to accomplish.

Engaging with Others and Growing

Be open to feedback and take the time to analyze your photographs to learn from mistakes and improve. Participate in workshops or meetings with other street photographers to gain knowledge and find inspiration. Promote your work through exhibitions or by creating an online portfolio to gather feedback and draw attention to your talent.

Overcoming Challenges

Don’t be afraid to photograph unknown people or unexpected situations. Avoid letting failures or negative criticism discourage you; instead, see them as valuable opportunities for growth and learning.

Enjoying the Journey

Enjoy street photography and embrace it as a form of artistic expression while exploring the world around you. Stay curious, remain open to new experiences, and continuously learn and grow as a street photographer.
