The Challenges of Macro Photography According to Javier Rupérez

I’ve been doing photography for a long time, but my real specialty is extreme macro, which I discovered just over ten years ago, a bit by chance. When I learned about the complexity of the world of extreme macro, including the use of microscope objectives adapted to our cameras, bellows, micrometric rails, electronic controllers, complex formulas to calculate depth of field, and a long list of other tools, I knew that this was my photographic world because I also discovered that I was good at it.

Highlighting the Shapes and Details of Insects in Macro Photography

It’s clear that microphotography is my passion, and what I enjoy photographing is the hidden world of insects. I find it very interesting that people can discover that wonderful micro world through my camera. In my photography, I strive to surprise the viewer, both with the curious shapes and details of the insects I capture and by putting a lot of effort into creating striking compositions. I always aim to use powerful colors and backgrounds that complement each photograph and contribute to a recognizable style.

Three Tips from Javier Rupérez for Getting Started in Macro Photography

Understanding your photography style

A better camera won’t make you a better photographer, so don’t get hung up on the great equipment that others have (they’re always going to have better gear than yours). Photography is a learning journey that unfolds gradually and in stages. You must gradually understand what your photography style is, regardless of the camera you have, and you only learn by taking a lot of photos. So, go out and take many photos every day.

Experimenting with affordable gear

When it comes to microphotography or extreme macro photography, the same principle applies. Although it can be a complicated world due to the complexity of the equipment, you can start with affordable gear and experiment until you determine if this photographic genre is for you.

Keep practicing every day

If you understand and navigate the world of extreme macro photography, never be satisfied with the results you achieve, because there is always room for improvement. Keep practicing every day, and you’ll see progress with each passing year.

Macro Photography: The Image That Has Marked Your Journey

It’s the typical question that I don’t like very much, since for me, my photos are like my little children; it’s like asking me which child I prefer. But since I have to answer it, I will say that after the first years in extreme macro, the first serious photo I took was that of a “red palm weevil” (Rhynchophorus ferrugineus) (a plague of palm trees in the world) that I published on the internet, and that an advertising agency in England bought from me. Suddenly, it appeared in numerous magazines, newspapers, and media around the world. From that photo, I realized that this type of photography was something I was particularly good at. So I remember it as my starting point, and that’s why I have a special affection for it.

Three Key Lessons from Macro Photographer Javier Rupérez

Invest wisely

If you already know that extreme macro photography is your passion, don’t rush into buying all the necessary equipment. Purchasing cheap items just to save money will likely lead to buying things twice. Of course, before you dive into this, make sure it’s truly what you want to pursue.

Stay consistent

Consistency is key. You need to quickly learn how to handle the equipment and software used in this specialty. There are complex calculations, mathematical formulas, and intricate uses of microscope lenses, among many other factors. It’s important not to relax; you have to learn quickly, and to do that, you must work hard.

Learn and evolve

While it’s great to innovate, take the time to study the work of other photographers who have come before you. Learn from their advice and explore all the possibilities. Don’t settle for the first results that may initially seem very good; over time, you’ll discover that there’s still plenty of room for improvement.
