What’s New in Avalanche for Lightroom

Avalanche for Lightroom 1.0.3

Released: 10 January 2020

Improvements and Fixes

  • fixed a potential crash when parsing Aperture libraries with malformed data (missing dates, malformed adjustment data, …).
  • numerous small bug fixes.

Know issues

  • Some cropped images have a width or height of 1 pixel after conversion. We are looking into this.
  • The hierarchies of projects and folders could be improved by not moving albums out of the hierarchy. This will be released in v1.0.5.

Known limitations

The following features are not yet implemented or not yet fully functional :

  • MacOS 10.14 Mojave is required
  • Aperture’s dedicated Skin Tones and NaturalGray white balance settings are not yet handled
  • the following Aperture effects are not yet supported: Sepia Toning, Monochrome effects, Levels,…
  • the following adjustments are not converted at all (default values apply) : Noise Reduction, Sharpening

What to expect in the next updates ?

We expect to deliver the following features in the coming releases :

  • better support for albums nested in folder and projects hierarchies.
  • support for MacOS High Sierra (10.13)
  • in progress – better conversion of adjustments
  • in progress – tentative support for Sepia toning, etc…

Avalanche for Lightroom 1.0.2

Improvements and Fixes

  • fixed a potential crash when parsing Aperture libraries with malformed data (missing dates, malformed adjustment data, …).
  • fixed a potential crash when parsing Lightroom libraries with malformed data (missing capture dates, unexpected data).
  • fixed a potential crash in the catalog browser screen.
  • numerous small and large bug fixes.

Know issues

  • Some cropped images have a width or height of 1 pixel after conversion. We are looking into this.
  • The hierarchies of projects and folders could be improved by not moving albums out of the hierarchy. This will be released in v1.0.5.

Known limitations

What’s New in Avalanche for Lightroom

Avalanche for Lightroom 1.0.1

Released: 26 December 2019

New features

  • an Excel (CSV) log file is now created alongside the exported catalog with all information about failures and how to solve them (missing images, ….).
  • Avalanche is now officially called ‘Avalanche for Lightroom‘ while other versions (for Luminar, for CaptureOne) are being announced on our web site.

Improvements and Fixes

  • improved final screen with better information about the export,
  • fixed a potential crash or corrupted data situation when some masters had been moved from an online volume.
  • fixed the folder hierarchies where masters are stored in the case of Lightroom export: it previously was systematically Flat event when the Year/Month option was chosen.
  • numerous small and large bug fixes.

Known limitations / issues

The following features are not yet implemented or not yet fully functional :

  • MacOS 10.14 Mojave is required

Welcome to the Avalanche Beta Program

Avalanche Beta 3 (7 October 2019)

Expiry: 30 Octobre 2019 Avalanche Beta 3 is the latest public beta of Avalanche. It provides the features listed below and comes also with a number of limitations that will be resolved during the beta phase. This initial release provides Aperture > Lightroom conversion with support for :
  • masters and versions,
  • albums, stacks,projects
  • full support for converting metadata, annotations, keywords, flags, ratings, etc…
  • conversion of adjustments using Machine Learning to match the visual appearance of the converted images
  • support for referenced or embedded images
  • full support for converting videos
A simple conversion to folders is also available either for Lightroom or Aperture, that will extract all images to a folder structure, with optional sidecar files.

Activate the beta

This version of Avalanche is full featured but expires after a while. We intend to publish new Beta versions on a regular basis. In order to activate your copy, click on the Free Beta button once in the conversion screen. You will see a purchase form for a price of 0$. Simply enter your email and you will be set.

What’s Changed ?

  • [NEW] : added support for videos : videos are now first class citizens inside the converted catalog into the new catalog with their metadata. They are part of the
  • [NEW] : added support for vignetting adjustment or devigneting adjustment. These are now migrated into Lightroom.
  • [NEW] : added support for RAW+Jpeg pairs
  • [IMPROVED] : improved the Machine Learning algorithms to get better conversion of adjustments. In particular, the BlackPoint value in Aperture is now converted into Blacks adjustments.
  • [IMPROVED] : added a Open Catalog menu
  • [IMPROVED] : many small adjustements to the UI and bug fixes.

Known limitations / issues

The following features are not yet implemented or not yet fully functional :
  • MacOS 10.14 Mojave is required
  • Faces are not yet supported
  • Lightroom catalogs are supported as a source but there is no other export besides Folders
  • Aperture’s dedicated Skin Tones and NaturalGray white balance settings are not handled
  • adjustments are not well converted in the case of non-raw (aka JPEG) images (see redish and blueish images above)
  • the following Aperture effects are not yet supported: Sepia Toning, Monochrome effects, Levels,…
  • the following adjustments are not converted at all (default values apply) : Noise Reduction, Sharpening

What’s New ?

  • We added support for migrating folders and projects in hierarchies when transfering from Aperture. This will ensure that your project organization is respected.
  • We added 2 collection sets: “Albums” and “Projects” under which all albums and projects are organized
  • We have fixed a critical crash that could happen at startup when checking the current date (beta 2.1)
  • We have fixed a critical crash that could happen during conversion of images that had no capture date (beta 2.2)
  • We have been working on supporting High Sierra, but it is not ready yet.

Known limitations / issues

The following features are not yet implemented or not yet fully functional :
  • MacOS 10.14 Mojave is required
  • Faces are not yet supported
  • Lightroom catalogs are supported as a source but there is no other export besides Folders
  • Images converted to monochrome are properly converted to grayscale in Lightroom but the AI is not doing an optimal job yet
  • Aperture’s dedicated Skin Tones and NaturalGray white balance settings are not handled – RAW + JPG images are not always properly handled
  • Adjustments are not well converted in the case of non-raw (aka JPEG) images
  • The following Aperture effects are not yet supported: Sepia Toning, Monochrome effects, Vignetting effect, Levels,…
  • The following adjustments are not converted at all (default values apply) : Noise Reduction, Sharpening

What to expect in the next betas ?

We expect to deliver the following features shortly :
  • support for MacOS High Sierra (10.13)
  • in progress – better support for videos. At the moment, videos are only extracted into a dedicated folder. In the next beta, videos will be properly inserted into the Lightroom catalog
